Spatial Scaling Patterns of Functional Diversity

چکیده

Ecology, biogeography and conservation biology, among other disciplines, often rely on species identity, distribution abundance to perceive explain patterns in space time. Yet, are not independent units the way they interact with their environment. Species perform similar roles networks ecosystems, at least partial redundancy or difference of might co-existence, competitive exclusion reflected community level. Therefore, considering traits, that is, organisms’ functional properties environment, be utmost importance study relative abundances. Several descriptive measures diversity, such as species-area relationship (SAR) (SAD), have been used extensively characterize communities a possible window gain insight into underlying processes shaping maintaining biodiversity. However, if role is better assessed by attributes, then one should also SAR SAD using trait-based approaches, only taxonomic species. Here we merged according similarity number creating units, these new equivalent (functional distributions - FUADs), emphasis spatial scaling characteristics. This idea was tested data arthropods collected Terceira island, Azorean archipelago. Our results showed diversity scales differently depending whether use units. If what determines communities’ dynamics our suggest may need revaluate commonly assumed and, concomitantly, processes.

Spatial scaling of functional gene diversity across various microbial taxa.

Understanding the spatial patterns of organisms and the underlying mechanisms shaping biotic communities is a central goal in community ecology. One of the most well documented spatial patterns in plant and animal communities is the positive-power law relationship between species (or taxa) richness and area. Such taxa-area relationships (TARs) are one of the principal generalizations in ecology...

Spatial patterns of phylogenetic diversity

Ecologists and conservation biologists have historically used species-area and distance-decay relationships as tools to predict the spatial distribution of biodiversity and the impact of habitat loss on biodiversity. These tools treat each species as evolutionarily equivalent, yet the importance of species' evolutionary history in their ecology and conservation is becoming increasingly evident....

Spatial Patterns of Poverty in Iran

Poverty can have spatial dimensions. While general figures might show the spatial pattern of poverty, there is a need for more detailed examination of this pattern. Relying on simple figures of spatial patterns and ranking regions based on them might be misleading. This paper tries to apply spatial analysis methodsm, namely spatial autoregressive models to find out the impacts of space on the h...

Mineral Grain Spatial Patterns and Reaction Rate Up-scaling

Reactive transport models that describe mineral reactions in porous media rely on laboratory measurements of rate parameters that may fail to represent reactions defined at larger averaging scales. In recently completed work, we used pore-scale network models to investigate the effects of heterogeneities in pore structure and mineral distribution on geochemical reaction rates in porous media. O...

Spatial patterns of hypolithic cyanobacterial diversity in Northern Australia

Photosynthetic microbial communities under translucent rocks (hypolithic) are found in many arid regions. At the global scale, there has been little intercontinental gene flow, and at a local scale, microbial composition is related to fine-scale features of the rocks and their environment. Few studies have investigated patterns of hypolithic community composition at intermediate distances. We e...
